SUMMARY:The Transcultural Sound World of Lukas Ligeti
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Sunday, June 2nd at 3 p.m. for an unprecedented musical event, The Transcultural Sound World of Lukas Ligeti. This remarkable evening will mark the North American premiere of “O jogo insondável” (2013), a groundbreaking sound installation composed from field recordings made in Brazil, Uruguay, and Burkina Faso by the visionary composer and percussionist, Lukas Ligeti. Originally commissioned by the Goethe Institute Rio de Janeiro for the 2014 Soccer World Cup, this 65-minute audio experience utilizes 5.1 surround sound to immerse the audience in a surreal experience of the game that could never happen in reality.\nFor this special occasion, Lukas Ligeti will be joined by acclaimed sound artist Gustavo Matamoros in a live performance preceding the North American premiere.\nLukas Ligeti, son of the legendary composer György Ligeti, has carved out a distinctive niche in the contemporary music world, transcending his illustrious lineage to forge an independent musical identity. His innovative approach integrates contemporary composition, experimental improvisation, and diverse global music traditions, particularly from Africa, into a unique sound that defies conventional categorization. Embracing instruments like the “marimba lumina,” Lukas is renowned for creating complex, polymetric textures and engaging in “experimental intercultural collaboration,” a concept he passionately promotes.\nHis work spans across continents, reflecting a deep commitment to exploring and uniting varied musical heritages. Having lived and worked in New York City, Southern California, and now dividing his time between Miami and Johannesburg, Lukas Ligeti’s career is marked by significant contributions to both performance and education. As a faculty member at the University of California, Irvine, and an Extraordinary Professor at the University of Pretoria, he has influenced the next generation of musicians. His performances, celebrated worldwide, showcase his unique capacity to blend improvisation with composition, making him a pivotal figure in the landscape of contemporary experimental music.\nGustavo Matamoros is a Miami-based, Venezuelan born composer and sound artist in residence at Deering Estate. He is curator of this series presented by Subtropics at the Community Theater. His installation Garden in collaboration with Robert Thiele is on view at the Richmond Cottage through July 20, 2024.\nSubtropics.org ‘s 2023-24 programs are possible with the support of the Miami-Dade County Mayor, the Board of County Commissioners, the Department of Cultural Affairs and The Cultural Affairs Council, as well as The Blank Family Foundation.\nSpecial thanks to our presenting sponsors, Deering Estate, Books & Books, Florida International University, Vertical Response, The Estate of Charles Recher, Arianographix of Miami, Art and Science Laboratory of Santa Fe, NM, Cyland Foundation, Contour Editions, and Sennheiser USA leader in superior sound technology\nFree and open to the public with R.S.V.P. online.\n
